Italiano!
Whilst walking along the cobbled streets of Torino we found what looked like a nice italian restaurant for some dinner. I approached the waitress and asked possiamo sedere al fondo? (can we sit outside?) she looked at me strangely and said fuori? but pointed to a nice little table under an umberella, so we sat down. As she walked away I realised that I’d actually just asked ‘can we sit in the oven?’!! We both cracked up laughing and tried to carry on as if nothing had happened. After maybe 40 minutes of ordering, chatting and eating I remembered that ‘in the oven’ translates to al forno and not al fondo. After a quick flick through the dictionary it turns out that I said one of the following…
Can we sit in the bottom? Can we sit in the dregs? (or my favourite) Can we sit in the dead of night?
I think I’ve got a bit of practise to do!
